Did you know: Not all Ben & Jerry's flavors make it to the store?. In fact, the popular Vermont ice cream company keeps a record of many of its failed flavors in a "Flavor Graveyard" on its website. (The famous ice cream company even has a real-life flavor graveyard, too!) Though he had been working in children’s animation for years, director Pierre Coffin accidentally ended up as the voice actor for all of the minions in Despicable Me,Despicable Me 2, and now, Minions. After helping create the now iconic look of the lovable henchmen for the original Despicable Me, he recorded a sample of what the minions might sound like for the movie’s producer. To his surprise, he was immediately cast in the part—which turned into more than 100 parts over time.
Pierre Coffin’s past work has included animation, directing, and voice acting. Once the minions became a cultural phenomenon, Coffin and the other creators of the first two Despicable Me movies decided it was time to come up with a backstory for the beloved creatures. They created Minions to explain who and what these mischievous little creatures are and where they come from. Minions is a prequel, set in a time before the minions became known to audiences as Gru’s henchmen. The story mostly takes place in 1968. It follows the three main characters, Kevin, Stuart, and Bob, in their quest for a new master after the minions’ series of well-meaning mistakes leave them leaderless. Since its discovery in 1930, Pluto has been an unexplored world. That is about to change, with the approach of the NASA spacecraft New Horizons. It will sweep past the dwarf planet on Tuesday. NASA has already released new photos providing the closest look that humans have ever gotten of Pluto’s icy surface.
New Horizons has traveled 3 billion miles over the past nine-and-a-half years to reach Pluto. It is the size of a baby grand piano, and is the fastest spacecraft ever launched. The craft is expected to pass within 7,767 miles of Pluto, about the distance between Seattle, Washington, and Sydney, Australia. “We’re going to knock your socks off,” said Alan Stern, the principal scientist of the New Horizons program. Has the King of Pop come back to life?
Six years after Michael Jackson's death, the King of Pop appears to have made a special appearance in the clouds during a thunderstorm over Virginia. John Plashal, a recreational photographer, snapped pictures of a violent thunderstorm on Tuesday, June 23, in Central Virginia and submitted the images to a local news site. It didn't take long for people to point out that the sky looked like a moonwalking Michael Jackson. It might seem that this image was photoshopped, but it actually wasn't! In the image below, you can see him in a black pant/ white shirt outfit doing the moonwalk On Friday, more than a ton of ivory was crushed in New York City’s Times Square. The act is meant to highlight the threat of the illegal ivory trade to African elephants, and show the world that the illegal ivory trade can not continue. The event was organized by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, New York State agencies and the Wildlife Conservation Society, which runs New York City's zoos. The crowd included lawmakers, wildlife advocates, and celebrities.
“Today’s ivory crush will send a message to the world,” U.S. Interior Secretary Sally Jewell told the crowd. “We’re not only crushing ivory, we’re crushing the ivory market.” After speeches, a 25-ton rock crusher began grinding ivory statues into a sand-like pulp. The hundreds of wildlife supporters broke out in applause as pieces of ivory flew from the machine. The destroyed ivory, along with six tons that were destroyed in 2013, will be used to create an elephant memorial. Supply and Demand Thousands of African elephants are killed each year for their ivory tusks. The ivory is used to make expensive jewelry, ornaments, and art. African elephant populations are now in grave danger because of the ivory trade. The ivory trade threatens African Elephants. The Times Square Event comes a week before the U.S. is expected to issue new regulations outlawing the ivory trade, and weeks after the Chinese government said it would plan to do the same. Wildlife activists say these actions are important. The rate of elephant poaching has increased in recent years, largely as a result of increased demand for ivory in China. Because of the demand, elephant populations have dwindled. Fewer than 500,000 elephants roam Africa today, and poachers kill 50,000 each year. Two-Sided Debate Destroying ivory that has been traded illegally may seem like a smart move. But, the practice has been criticized from a number of groups, including some wildlife supporters. They say that ivory contains evidence that could be used against traders. Others argue that crushing ivory reduces the supply and increases the odds that poachers will hunt more elephants. But the groups behind the ivory crushing say the public awareness of this issue far outweighs the risks. “I had no idea that the U.S. was one of the largest ivory markets in the world,” said Food Network star Katie Lee, who works with conservation group 96 Elephants. “Every time I tell someone the statistics, they’re shocked. The more people that hear about this, the more change that can take place.” Jeffrey Flocken, who leads the International Fund for Animal Welfare’s North American branch, described the one ton load as “a drop in the ocean.” Still, he said, crushing the ivory sends a clear message that the illegal trade won’t be accepted. Have you ever looked at someone and wondered what is going on inside his or her head? Disney Pixar's new movie Inside Out takes you there to find out. The movie centers on Riley, 11, who has just moved to a new city and started a new school. Inside her mind, also known as “headquarters,” there is a control center where five emotions—Joy, Fear, Anger, Disgust, and Sadness—are hard at work. Joy’s mission is to make sure Riley stays happy. Fear controls safety, Anger makes sure all is fair, and Disgust keeps Riley from getting poisoned—both physically and socially. Sadness isn’t exactly sure what her role is, and neither is anyone else. While Riley is trying to adjust to her new environment, Joy and Sadness are accidently swept into the back of Riley’s mind. That leaves Fear, Anger, and Disgust in charge. Heavy rains and floods hit Texas over the holiday weekend leaving a trail of destruction in their wake. Twins blasts from the Calbuco volcano, in Southern Chile, darkened the skies on Wednesday afternoon. The eruption created a remarkable display of smoke plumes and ash as the volcano roared to life. The first blast was followed several hours later by a second, which painted the sky in hues of red and orange above the cities of Puerto Varas and Puerto Montt. The volcano also sparked intense streaks of lightning that lit up the rising ash cloud.
I think this is unbelieveable, but its true!
a 2-year-old playing with the knobs and buttons of a sophisticated music system At a shopping mall appearance, a crowd gathers around the young boy as he bops his head to the beat, his large headphones slipping off. Adults whip out their cellphones to capture the moment while children just stare. The parents were blown away when their son, still in diapers, repeated what he had learned on the app on actual DJ equipment, playing with sound effects and bouncing between songs. A cellphone video of him playing went viral and now DJ AJ has nearly 25,000 Facebook fans Hillary Rodham Clinton is expected to announce on Sunday that she will seek the presidency for a second time, ending two years of speculation and immediately establishing herself as the likely 2016 Democratic nominee.
This campaign will begin on a small scale and build up to an effort likely to cost more than any presidential bid waged before, with Mrs. Clinton’s supporters looking to raise as much as $2.5 billion in a blitz of donations from Democrats who overwhelmingly support her candidacy. Much of that enthusiasm is tied to the chance to make history by electing a woman president. But some, too, owes to the lack of compelling alternatives in a party trying desperately to hold on to the White House when Republicans control the House and the Senate.
